      As the number of medical devices manufactured using additive manufacturing/3D printing technologies continues to increase, manufacturers struggle with the quality, validation, and filing processes to have each device cleared for use.       Session Description:
      This presentation will discuss the conversation that should happen between engineering and manufacturing in part selection. This would include the design process changes that need to happen when you’re designing for additive manufacturing. Focus on proper part selection and redesigning FOR additive is critical to 3D Print adoption, especially in the aerospace industry. The sooner AM design is involved in the design cycle, the more cost effective and beneficial the resultant part will be. Also, with 3D printing, designers can create the parts to do live testing before they can fully analyze them, disrupting current internal processes for the design cycle. The use of dynamic flow paths for heat exchangers and lattice for light weighting further demonstrates this need. Also discussed is how to focus your design efforts after part selection, targeting specific joining operations/special processes, balanced with varied AM materials, to reduce total cost of ownership and improved part lifting.
